The exhibition Midway to Nowhere places the image of the swing at its center, using it as a point of departure to explore states of balance and fragility—physical, emotional, and social. The sensation of swaying appears both figuratively and abstractly, touching on the emotional and societal upheaval that has shaken Israel since October 7, raising questions of strength, fear, and stability in an ever-shifting reality.
Through works in video, sculpture, and painting, the participating artists examine the ongoing motion between sky and earth, the search for equilibrium, and the delicate moments between falling and floating.
The swing, as an object charged with both physical and emotional meanings, evokes experiences of movement, excitement, and instability. It hovers between the tangible and the metaphysical, engaging with gravity, suspension, and rhythm.
The exhibition also draws inspiration from the Hebrew children’s poem “Nadneda” (“Swing”) by H.N. Bialik, a text layered with spiritual, physical, and metaphysical interpretations. The poem illuminates the cyclical nature of life, the emotional turbulence of existence, and the existential questions that accompany us from childhood through old age.
