OREN FISCHER: PEOPLE OF SHAPIRA
TLV Partners Special Edition
Oren Fischer, People of Shapira, 2019
Mixed media sculpture; plywood, iron wire, paint
Project Overview
Oren Fischer's work grows out of the neighborhoods and people of south Tel Aviv. Each sculpture comes to life out of simple materials gathered around the neighborhood -- plywood, iron wire and paint. In Fischer’s skillful hands, rough planks become human figures who are at the same time rough and gentle. Fischer does not attempt to refine or conceal the directness of the materials, connections and lines of the works, on the contrary, he adopts and perpetuates them. By doing so, he creates a critical but loving look at the city and its inhabitants, the various layers of existence it allows and the diverse human fabric that makes it up. Mixed with a sense of humor, the works challenge prejudices and social myths and provoke critical thought about the meeting between private and public in the collective space.
The sculpture series, created especially for TLV Partners, is a tribute to the residents of the Shapira neighborhood, where Fisher works. The neighborhood is located near the Central Bus Station, a semi derelict structure that nonetheless pulsates with life, and serves as an important space for several communities, including Israelis, refugees and migrant workers. At the same time, Fischer has drawn inspiration from African sculpture styles as well as from The Want of Matter -- a major movement in the history of Israeli art.
Oren Fischer (b. USA 1984) is a self-taught artist, activist and art-world entrepreneur. A growing artist, Fisher has exhibited his work at solo shows since in 2014, and has participated in numerous group shows in museums and galleries in Israel and around the world. In 2019 he won the prestigious Hammer Award from the Sotheby's Auctioneer to the Young Artists’ Incubator at a fresh color fair.
